UC is well out of its nascent stage and is now a household name among growth and productivity-minded business leaders who are looking for ways to improve their organizations. Related: 10 Reasons Businesses Are Switching To UC Cloud Services At this point, UC is no longer a vague idea but a robust technology solution that is in strong demand from businesses of all sizes. UC helps onsite and distributed teams work together more closely and collaboratively, as it combines a variety of services into a single platform including voice, video, fax, presence, and more.  2018 Trends In The UC Space It’s been a long year in the UC space, so let’s recap some of the biggest trends:  Mergers & Acquisitions There were some notable mergers in this space this year. Cisco made headlines when the company took over BroadSoft, as did LogMeIn’s acquisition of Jive Communications, and Plantronics acquisition of Polycom rocked the boat for many telecom providers wondering how it would affect their inventories. More recently, Momentum Telecom acquired Phoenix-based CloudNet Group, yet another M&A to add to the growing list. These all came on the heels of other major game changers such as Mitel/ShoreTel and VMware/VeloCloud in 2017. Mergers and acquisitions have been noted with more frequency in the Unified Communications space, often indicating the quickly changing needs of the industry to incorporate more end-to-end technologies. For many industry leaders, this requires the acquisition of or partnership with other companies who complement their offerings. Related: 10 Tips To Create A Better Customer Experience This Holiday Season Full Spectrum Communications At Star2Star, the phenomenon of offering end-to-end communications solutions for a truly unified experience has been coined “Full Spectrum Communications”. A full spectrum approach enables businesses to provide any type of UC service within a single portfolio. This is further enhanced by the ability to develop or integrate unique solutions for the needs of a business. Full Spectrum Communications allows businesses to leverage even greater competitive advantage through communications that are customized to work with, not around, their operations.  Related: What You Should Know About Chatbots SD-WAN Adoption Businesses are no longer interested in UC alone. Now, the focus is shifting to optimizing and improving communications and collaboration across the entire enterprise. As such, there was a tremendous uptick in software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN), a technology that provides increased visibility and control across the network. Look for this trend to increase even further in 2019, as companies continue to layer bandwidth-intensive applications onto their networks.  Related: Why UCaaS & SD-WAN Are A Perfect Match Evolving Wi-Fi Many businesses are now in the process of upgrading their underlying Wi-Fi connections, to improve critical services such as UC. Earlier this year, the Wi-Fi Alliance released its WPA3 standard for enhanced security. WPA3 certified routers are now being shipped. And next year, we will see the ratification of the IEEE’s 802.11ax standard, or Wi-Fi 6. It’s exciting to think about a future where UC can be supported by SD-WAN, over a more powerful network protected by superior WPA3 security. Related: The Evolution Of PBX To Cloud PBX Communications Video Expansion As connectivity continues to get better, and companies discover ways to manage bandwidth more effectively, businesses will have an easier time leveraging resource-intensive services such as video conferencing. According to one study, the global video conferencing market will grow at a CAGR of 7.9 percent (2018-2026), reaching $10 billion. Video conferencing is widely used to reduce travel and expenses while improving teamwork and collaboration. Just about every enterprise today is using video in some form or another. Related: Understanding The UC Sales Funnel Enhanced Security Business leaders are still on edge about cybersecurity, with the total cost of a successful cyber attack now hovering around $5 million. As such, many businesses are looking to layer security solutions on top of their UC offerings. Aggregators that can bring top-of-the-line security partnerships to the table stand a much better chance of securing contracts.  Related: Key Market Drivers In Cloud Communications

With the advent of the PBX, businesses no longer had to purchase separate telephone lines for users or utilize third party providers. This was a big upgrade.  Related: Understanding The UC Sales Funnel Yet while PBX systems offer an upgrade over traditional switchboards, they still have some major drawbacks. For instance, they are still very expensive and require a hefty amount of capital and operational expenditures. They also require access to expert IT personnel, who know how to update and maintain them.  Related: How To Own Your Year This Quarter While many businesses continue to use traditional PBX systems today, a growing number are instead choosing to leverage cloud PBX offerings. Now, massive and complex PBX systems can be virtualized, enabling businesses to save money, while becoming faster and more agile.  Related: Customized Communications Can Help Your Business Thrive A cloud PBX system, for instance, lives offsite in a managed, hosted facility. This drastically reduces costs for businesses, as they do not have to worry about performing any expensive maintenance work. Instead of getting blindsided by unexpected service fees, businesses gain access to predictable monthly charges, as the majority of programs charge on a per-user basis.  Related: Looking Forward To Seasonal Trends What’s more, hosted PBX systems are incredibly easy to scale. Most companies allow you to add user licenses as they are needed. This process is much harder for a business using a traditional PBX system, which is not ideal for a growing organization. Businesses need to be able to scale overnight, in order to accommodate any volume of incoming customers.  Here are some of the top benefits that come with using a cloud PBX system:  Improved Reliability The cost of downtime varies wildly from business to business. According to Gartner, it can run anywhere from $140,000 per hour to $540,000 per hour. Many organizations, however, cannot recover from such hefty losses.  Related: 10 Tips For Selling Evolving & Emerging Technologies Fortunately, businesses do not have to worry about uptime and performance issues when using a cloud PBX system. A cloud provider, for instance, will store all infrastructure offsite, in modern and secure facilities for disaster recovery. These facilities are typically fortified with redundant, high-speed fiber internet connections so that if a problem is detected on a circuit, a switch can be automatically made. Analog phone lines can also be offered for additional voice protection. Advanced Monitoring Performance, stability, and security are essential for providing great customer service. Advanced monitoring is needed to detect issues before they impact network communications. It’s highly resource intensive, however, to this in-house. Most cloud PBX providers offer this service for customers.  Related: UC Solutions For Every Industry Help Desk If something goes wrong with a cloud PBX system, all you have to do is contact customer support. Cloud providers offer guaranteed quality, backed by a service level agreement. If an issue arises, it’s the provider’s job to fix it. This is a big help for businesses with overburdened IT teams. Instead of spending all of their time fixing backend communications, IT teams can be freed to focus on higher level tasks across the enterprise.  Related: Top 10 Technologies That Changed Business Communications Advanced Connectivity Large enterprises also need to consider how well data-intensive voice services function across multiple branch locations. It’s not always easy, however, and businesses often suffer from a lack of visibility and control across the network.  Related: The Characteristics Of A True Global Communications Company Some cloud PBX providers address this issue by offering software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN). With SD-WAN, businesses can set policies that ensure all applications receive adequate resources across the network. SD-WAN should be a key component for any business considering a cloud PBX solution.

This is sink or swim time, when customer volumes spike and communications systems get put to the true test. Businesses with robust communications systems will excel during the next couple of months, while companies that lack the proper resources will falter, wasting valuable money-making opportunities. We see it happen every year.  Related: Looking Forward To Seasonal Trends Take a look at any leading enterprise today, and you will notice one thing in common: Almost all are using powerful Unified Communications (UC) platforms that enable them to maximize and control the way employees exchange information and collaborate as a group.  With UC, it’s the difference between using disparate voice and video services, and a centralized, web-based console that can be accessed and managed from any global location.  End 2018 Strong Here are the top five ways that UC can help you own your year:  Scale Quickly Businesses need to be prepared to handle the uptick in customer service inquiries and purchases that come during the fourth quarter. With UC, it’s possible to quickly add virtual phone lines as they are needed to accommodate any number of incoming requests. These virtual phone lines can then be scaled back after the holiday season when customer volumes return to their normal rate.  Related: Developing A Strategic Business Plan For UC Avoid App Downtime This is not the time of the year to experience unplanned downtime across the network. UC can work in conjunction with software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN), enabling IT administrators to manage and control traffic across multiple branch locations. With UC and SD-WAN, you can ensure that critical apps have the resources they need to work properly.  Related: Top 10 Favorite UC Features Onboard Faster Nearly a million jobs were gained in the U.S. during the final quarter of 2017, and this year should be no different thanks to the current economic climate. With UC, businesses can onboard new employees without placing an excessive burden on IT to get them up and running. UC is great for remote workers as well, as it can be rapidly deployed to any global location.  Related: UC Solutions For Every Industry Boost Productivity Time is of the essence during the busy holiday rush and as businesses everywhere try to meet their year-end goals. This is true across all areas of the enterprise, from contact center agents to marketing and sales teams to executives. UC can boost productivity and save time in a number of ways. For instance, video chats can be used to avoid lengthy in-person meetings. Presence indicators can allow team members to see when other workers are available to chat. And instant messaging can empower workers to seamlessly carry on conversations throughout the day.  Related: Top 10 Trends In Productivity For 2018 Security Cybercriminals work overtime during the holiday season, looking for vulnerabilities that can be exploited to steal sensitive information. With so much happening this time of year, it’s easy for employees to neglect basic cybersecurity considerations. With UC, businesses can communicate safely as all communications can take place inside of a centralized, secure, and encrypted platform. This can prevent information sprawl, leading to a much safer environment.  Related: Customized Communications Can Help Your Business Thrive The Fourth Quarter Roll Call If one thing is true about the fourth quarter, it’s that it will be over before you know it — leading the way to a new year of challenges. With UC, businesses can plan ahead as a team using powerful collaboration tools and easily transition into the next quarter after the holidays end. UC can be used for scalable, cost-effective communications all year long.

Now that the cloud has become a household name, businesses are becoming more selective in how they choose their services.  Related: Why Businesses Are Changing Their Views On UC “It is what’s offered, how fast it’s delivered, and how well it’s supported that will make the difference in selecting a provider,” explained Delphi President Gary Audin in a recent post.  According to Audin, small businesses have emerged as top cloud adopters. Medium and large businesses, however, are proving to be harder sells.  Related: Why Small Businesses Should Choose Cloud-Based VoIP This gap, Audin’s post explains, is especially noticeable in the international market. Very small businesses seem to be adopting cloud communications, while the adoption rate is decreasing for large enterprises. Audin maintains providers should be looking to expand internationally to continue succeeding and growing. The U.S., surprisingly, is second globally — behind the Netherlands — for market penetration at 12 percent.  Market Drivers Of Growth  Business needs and concerns have changed significantly since the cloud first emerged, meaning there are new market drivers to consider.   Some of the top reasons for cloud migration today include:   Agility A new study from Nemertes found that improved agility for IT is now the top driver for cloud migration. This is an increase from 29 percent in 2017. Businesses today mostly seem to be concerned with rolling services out to market quickly and reliably, which is much more difficult when working with legacy backend systems.  Related: What Full Spectrum Communications Can Offer Your Business Businesses seeking greater agility could strongly benefit from Unified Communications (UC). Through UC, a business can push all of its communications tools into one cloud-based or hybrid platform that can be accessed over the internet. This enables rapid deployment and scalability, as well as simplified management and maintenance. UC is also great for businesses undergoing transitions, where the need for agility is heightened.  Lower Costs Cost savings isn’t the big mover that it used to be in this space, but it’s still a top reason for migrating to the cloud.  CAPEX vs. OPEX, after all, was listed as the second-biggest driver in Nemertes’ study, while 33 percent of respondents cited cost as the primary factor for adopting cloud communications.   Related: Ease The Pain Of M&A With Unified Communications Of course, financial considerations will vary depending on the size of the business. Small businesses may be more likely to cite cost savings as a top reason for migrating to the cloud. A large enterprise may be less concerned about pinching pennies. Every business has different financial goals, though.  Related: Why Small Business Communications Are Important To Revenue According to one Amdocs study, it should be noted, 80 percent of SMBs would prefer to get a single bill for all of their communications — both cloud and traditional. So it’s worth talking to IT administrators about the financial benefits of consolidating their invoices.  Performance Network reliability remains a huge concern for distributed businesses, especially multinationals. And for this reason, it’s a top driver of cloud migration. Across the board, IT administrators are looking to transition away from MPLS systems to streamline connectivity and improve performance.  Related: How UC Is Leading Digital Transformation Cloud services can be enhanced using software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN), which gives IT the ability to establish policies and regulate computing resources at any location. Using SD-WAN, it’s possible to ensure that all critical applications have the resources they need to operate efficiently and reliably.  Security Security can either be a top driver, or a top barrier to cloud adoption for a business depending on its size, market, and location.  It’s worth considering a recent Ponemon study, however, where 87 percent of respondents stated that cloud governance will become very important in the next two years, yet many do not believe their IT department is capable of handling it.  Related: How To Ensure UC Security Security is a hot-button issue now that GDPR is being enforced globally. What’s more, we are a little over a year away from seeing widespread consumer privacy reform in California. Businesses everywhere should be looking to the cloud to remain in compliance and reduce costly fines.  As you can see, trends move quickly in the cloud communications space which is why it pays to work with a full spectrum provider that is in tune with the market.

At 54 million seats in 2017, billions of capital are still expected to enter the market in 2018 along with more competitors hungry for a slice of the potential profits. With this degree of volume, differentiating enough to stand out is becoming a bigger challenge. Appealing to vertical markets is increasingly recognized as the new frontier for cloud UC service providers. Related: Why Businesses Are Changing Their Views On UC Vertical Markets 101 Given that companies are increasingly focusing on cloud solutions, it’s important for UC providers to know what companies prioritize today and acknowledge the value of vertical marketing. This option can help your business increase revenue and narrow the competitive pool by boosting your service offering and credibility in a specialized area. Related: The Difference Between Cloud & Hosted Services To illustrate the point, there are about 187 cloud UC companies worldwide today. Some verticals are remarkably large, such as healthcare and customer service, which make them ideal for industry-specific marketing. Cloud vendors can designate indirect marketing dollars to a couple of industries offering reasonable prices. Taking Advantage Of Vertical Marketing When buyers are looking for cloud solutions, they tend to do their research and have already identified their needs and budget by the time they contact a potential vendor. To maximize your chances, implementing a strong SEO strategy is necessary in order to stand out during a potential customer’s initial research phase. Related: Top 10 Trends In Productivity For 2018 To focus your online presence, choose the specific field that you want to target and match your pitch with the appropriate buyers. Appeal to them and familiarize yourself with their challenges and opportunities. Many verticals have not been singled out by cloud providers yet, leaving the field relatively open for targeted messages. Related: How UC Is Leading Digital Transformation The key to success in vertical marketing is to start small and reach for a segment that presents the lowest risk for the biggest payoffs. Though this means less opportunity for higher profits initially, it gives you the ability to perfect your processes, messages, and offerings. Once you have done this legwork, you can better assess the available opportunities and hone in on those with the most money to spend. Market Drivers Recent research has shown that three factors are currently driving the market towards more growth. These include enterprise customer behavior, enhanced UC features, and an increase in service providers. Enterprise Customer Behavior Enterprise customer behavior is a small portion of the market. 10% of large businesses have UCaaS and use cloud computing. As the use of cloud computing continues to grow, the enterprise market for cloud solutions does as well, promoting cloud UC as enterprise-grade technology and thus more attractive to smaller companies as well.  Related: The Digital Workplace & Industry 4.0 UC Features Collaboration, integrations, and APIs are expected to double or triple the average revenue per user (ARPU). In addition to the market becoming more specialized, businesses are seeing the need to specialize their operations as well. Integrations and APIs allow organizations that need CRM and other applications to enhance productivity to customize their workflows to their unique needs. Cloud UC vendors who can accommodate this need stand to gain some additional ground in the marketplace. Related: 6 Long-Term UC Benefits For Your Business Service Providers The third factor driving this market upswing is the influx of thousands of service providers into the market. In order to enter the market, service providers must develop increasingly sophisticated offerings, which lead to more differentiation and higher standards overall. The Final Verdict In addition to the overarching trends already mentioned, providers and investors are continuing to seek acquisitions leading to market expansion with increasingly powerful UC provider organizations. This increases the difficulty for small business and startups to compete on the same scale but increases the importance of vertical marketing and specialization. In a couple of years, it’s predicted that the amount of cloud UC companies will increase by several hundred, so becoming a leader in vertical markets now will likely pay off greatly in the near future.

When most UCaaS vendors, for instance, talk about the service capabilities, the focus inevitably turns to the upper end of the market with upwards of 100 or even 500 seats; rarely are businesses with fewer than 20 seats mentioned as a strategic target. Naturally, larger companies represent high-value targets – larger customers come with larger monthly spend. But, there are several reasons why very small business communications opportunities should not be overlooked as a significant revenue stream. Related: Why Small Business Communications Should Include Cloud-Based VoIP Market Size First and foremost is the sheer size of the market. Businesses with fewer than 20 employees comprised two-thirds of the 6.8 million registered businesses in the United States alone according to the U.S. Census Bureau – that’s about 4.5 million potential customers. With 10-12% turnover year-to that also means a host of brand new businesses looking for quick deployment options, a clear strength for cloud providers. Related: Moving To Hybrid Cloud Communications - Whitepaper Sales Cycle In addition, small businesses tend to run on much shorter sales cycles, bringing in revenue faster – and revenue, any way you break it down, is revenue. With fewer users per company, support demands on providers are inherently lower. In fact, very small businesses can be ideal targets for self-serve deployments, making the entire cycle very hands-off. Related: 4 Must-Haves For Small Business Communications Resources & Support Small businesses and startups, by nature, have two other attributes that lend themselves ideally to hosted services. They have limited IT resources and an economic structure that allows for very little up-front capital spend, prime reasons for opting for cloud UC. In addition, a lack of IT teams means they don’t have the ability to manage their own systems. Still, they need the versatility of a device and location agnostic solution to accommodate team members in multiple locations, including home offices. Related: The Top 5 Benefits Of Hosted UC Small Business Communications Add Up To Big Payouts So, while the per customer monthly revenue is relatively small compared to larger businesses, the incremental revenue from focusing on a market most providers are largely bypassing is a sizable opportunity in a competitive market; the limited resources and time required to sell and deploy to very small businesses can make a very profitable venture. Furthermore, because cloud solutions scale easily, they can accommodate growth as small business communications demand more functionality to handle increased competition. Related: How UC Is Leading Digital Transformation The bottom line: there really isn’t a market that isn’t well-suited for Unified Communications.  The functionality and integration with other systems may be dependent on customer size, but the fundamental value of Unified Communications and collaboration solutions holds for all businesses. Mobility, rapid deployment, flexibility, device independence, integration with other software, and scalability all allow businesses to communicate more effectively internally as well as with customers. And with customer experience being such a high priority, consistency of communications is also a must--another advantage of a cloud-based or hybrid system, which supports business continuity regardless of unexpected circumstances.

It helps businesses save money, enhance productivity, and increase their flexibility, making UCaaS one of the most transformative and exciting enterprise technologies we have seen in recent years.  Related: The Dynamic Duo That Benefits Your Business With so many applications now running in the cloud, the modern enterprise needs a way to keep up with increased network demands and manage traffic. This is where UCaaS and Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) come together to overcome a new breed of enterprise challenges. When a business' network cannot support their traffic demands, they are likely to encounter problems such as jitter and latency during conversations. This can negatively impact the customer experience, frustrate employees, and lead decision-makers to question the benefits of investing in UCaaS in the first place.   How SD-WAN Solutions Enhance UCaaS Platforms To help customers overcome these issues, a growing number of UCaaS providers are now partnering with technology vendors offering SD-WAN solutions and services. SD-WAN is a broad term with many different components, but it can be described as a technology that allows businesses to manage and adjust WAN traffic in real-time using software-based controls. With SD-WAN, you can guarantee that your UCaaS applications receive the critical resources they need to function properly. SD-WAN also provides backup connectivity, protecting you from link failure, as well as heightened security through encryption.   Related: How UC Is Leading Digital Transformation Over the last few months, we have seen a major uptick in SD-WAN adoption at the enterprise level. SD-WAN is now considered a top priority for enterprise network managers, so it should come as no surprise that UCaaS providers are responding to this demand—especially when considering how well the technologies support one another. SD-WAN provides the dynamic network environment that UCaaS requires to enable fast, efficient, and cost-effective data transfers. Choosing Your SD-WAN Solution There are many different vendors offering SD-WAN services today, making it challenging for businesses to narrow down a specific provider. Here are some important things to keep in mind when browsing for the best SD-WAN solution:  Architecture Many SD-WAN solutions on the market may seem equivalent, but not all architectures are made equal. Look for the solution that fits with your existing architecture and networking needs, instead of trying to work around them. Your SD-WAN vendor should be able to accommodate any internet connection, firewall, or cloud application you are using. Installation Identifying a provider to help you improve upon your networking demands is already hard enough. The last thing you want is to go through a complicated installation process that involves unnecessary downtime or additional configurations. Look for a provider that offers plug-and-play installation so that you can get your enhanced network up and running faster and get back to business. Quality-of-Service (QoS) Look for an SD-WAN solution with built-in QoS that prioritizes your VoIP and real-time traffic needs across any connection and network, including the public Internet. The ideal SD-WAN service will have bi-directional QoS features which ensure enhanced functionality and dynamically adapt to varying bandwidths and traffic demands. Direct Peering Options For the best user experiences, look for an SD-WAN solution that offers direct peering with a variety of third-party applications. Direct peering is a pre-set connection between two networks which removes the complexity of a third component to manage the information they want to share. SD-WAN with direct interconnections to other services allow you to enhance your experience even more with faster access to all of the tools you rely on.

In many companies, however, the opposite is now taking place as employees have too many apps to manage. People are spending more and more time moving between programs instead of focusing on their work. It’s a distracting, and frustrating problem. Related: The Digital Workplace & Industry 4.0 A recent study by Cite Research found that 69 percent of workers waste up to 32 days each year navigating between apps. Sixty-eight percent toggle between apps up to 10 times an hour. And workers today are now using an average of four different apps, with 20 percent using six or more. App usage is bound to intensify in the coming years, too, as more solutions come to market. There’s An App For That...And That Most enterprise decision makers seem to be aware there is room for improvement with the apps they are using. The majority of organizations have plans in place to upgrade their enterprise apps in order to streamline productivity and drive better user experiences. Looking forward, it will be critical to put Unified Communications (UC) at the forefront of any app improvement strategy.Related: Voice Recognition Is The Next Phase Of UC If your business is experiencing app overload, one of the best solutions is to find a Unified Communications system that helps you streamline your applications in a way that works for your unique workflows. This may require custom development or integration work, so finding a UC provider that offers a high-quality system and the additional services all in one greatly reduces complexity. How The Right UC Solution Helps With App Overload When you find the right provider and solution for your communications needs, you can expect the following benefits which will all help to reduce app overload frustrations: A single platform that unifies core communications technologies such as voice, video, conferencing, mobile, chat, presence management, and moreThe ideal deployment for your business that gets you up and running with a simplified communications solutionUser-friendly interfaces that are easy to navigate and help you switch seamlessly between the various communications channelsDepending on your selected provider, you may also have access to a complete suite of advanced features which you never knew you needed, such as analytics or turnkey integrations to other third-party applications you useReliable, flexible, and scalable communications that adapt to your business; this is perhaps the most important point of a UC system and one that will provide the most relief from app overload concernsRelated: The Top 5 Benefits Of Hosted UC

This day, celebrated annually on March 31, is meant to serve as a reminder for all business leaders to secure and backup their data to more than one storage system. Related: Are You Ready For Cybersecurity Awareness Month? In observance of World Backup Day, here are three simple steps you can take to ensure that your communications are protected: Encrypt What You Cannot Control If you’re ready to take security seriously, a good place to start is with encryption. Ditch public WiFi in favor of a VPN to make it harder for anyone to access your networks and data. There are also plenty of messaging services using encryption as a baseline. Related: 3 More Ways To Maintain Secure Communications Close Gaps In Your Cybersecurity Strategy Just because you have firewalls, antivirus software, and an IT team monitoring your network activity does not mean your cybersecurity is completely foolproof. These solutions lock the front door, but every employee can open it back up by clicking the wrong link or signing a personal mobile device onto the wrong public network. In order to minimize risks, establishing a safety-conscious policy for all online activities and sending out frequent reminders can help avoid any potential security issues.Related: How To Ensure UC Security Back It Up Of course, we cannot ignore this crucial piece of advice. On-site resources can be backed up with a secondary redundant network that ensures continuity in an emergency. Additionally, off-site colocated cloud-based storage will provide an added layer of data protection should your on-premise network suffer a catastrophic loss. And it always helps to back up your files several times a year even as much as once or twice a month.
